In Latham, Empire BlueCross, in partnership with its company’s philanthropic arm, the Empire BlueCross Foundation, hosted several Volunteer Day activities in the Capital Region last month as part of its mission to make nutritious food more accessible and affordable and improve access to food for local communities. Empire volunteers worked both in the product sorting area and on the warehouse dock of the Northeastern New York State Regional Food Bank in Latham, assisted the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society in Albany to prepare a weekend bag for students containing shelf-stable meals and a book, and served in the Bethesda House soup kitchen in Schenectady, helping to prepare, cook and serve meals to those who need it. In addition to Volunteer Day activities, Empire BlueCross provides over 50,000 meals to students in need across the region. These meals are made possible by a donation of $ 25,000 to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York to support the organization’s Backpack program through August 2022. In Galway, Galway Library is hosting the Great Community Give Back during the month of October as part of a statewide program to provide a day of opportunities for library patrons and community members to participate in a meaningful and service-oriented experience. The library hosts three simultaneous programs to support the local community: 1) The creation of greeting cards to distribute to patients in hospitals in the region. Cards can be made at home or at the library, and the library will provide cards and decorating materials. 2) A non-perishable food drive for the Galway Food Pantry. As an additional incentive for donations, the library will reduce the library’s accumulated late fees by $ 1 per item. 3) A similar food drive, but to support the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. For each unopened box or bag of dog / cat food donated, the library will also offer a $ 1 fine reduction. For more information on the library and its activities, visit: https://www.galwaypubliclibrary.org/.
